Ducks At Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands

I took a trip from Tortola British Virgin Islands (where I live) to Jost Van Dyke (another island of the British Virgin Islands) on Monday February 25, 2013 for my birthday.  It was a great day.  It was my initial intention to go solo but early in the morning I received a telephone call from my daughter-in-law's mother and she asked to join me on my trip.  We did an ATV tour and at the end of the day we just sat and relaxed at the beach while waiting for the boat to return to take us back to Tortola.

While waiting for the boat captain to arrive, I noticed these ducks that usually hang out at the pond, come out of their safety zone and walk to the beach into the water!  Some drank some water and took a dip.  Others just walked around the area.  I guess if there were not alot of people in the area they would have gone into the water but as my friend and I were there, they just waddle back to their home. I was totally fascinated with them and as you can see I got some really great photos!

Frangipani Caterpillar

Frangipani Caterpillar:  This is a beautiful caterpillar with its base color of black and yellow strips.  It is difficult to identify the head from the tail until the insect moves.  Here in this photo, the part suspended in mid air is obviously the head.  As I was writing this post, I realized that the legs on that part of the Frangipani caterpillar, are different to the legs on the lower half on its body.  Seems like these legs act as suction on the branches (support) and the legs on the upper are used as the 'hands'.  To be the very back end of the Frangipani looks like a lobster tail, just above that is a piece sticking out like an antennae.

It is only recently that I found out that the name of this caterpillar is Frangipani Caterpillar.  Wow you are never too old to learn - you learn something everyday!  Anyway Frangipani caterpillar are mostly sighted in the early part of the year. They feed on the leaves of the Frangipani trees.  Presently, in the area where I work, there are hardly any leaves on these trees and the Frangipani Caterpillar are very big and fat!  These caterpillars eventually turn into Hawk Moths.

Nikon Speedlight SB-700

I collected my Nikon Speedlight SB-700 flash yesterday.  I had it shipped from Boolchand (in addition to selling jewellery, they sell cameras and accessories) in St. Thomas.  Cost $325.00!!!  About two months ago I purchased another cheap (less than $100.00) flash (Yongnuo Speedlite YN560) but it was not a Nikon and I am yet to figure out how to take good photos with it.  The photos had alot of light and I was not satisfied.

I met a gentleman a few weeks ago and we were taking about photography and we were discussing this same matter and he advised that I should made the investment and get the Nikon Speedlight SB-700.  Well I can tell you right now I am very pleased.  I did a few test yesterday in areas where the lighting is very minimal and the photos were great! Note:  I have not read the manuel nor have I made any adjustment to the flash or camera.

Also with the other flash it was not stable on the camera but with the Nikon SB-700, there is a lever on the flash that allows me to stabilise it on the camera.

It is always advisable to purchase accessories like flash and lens that are manufactured by the same company that made the camera.
